Can not play DVD without backend connection

Description

I was doing some maintenance on the backend, my wife was watching some movies. Hard disk video playback works fine (divx etc) but when she selected "watch dvd" in the optical disks menu, the frontend complained it was not able to connect to the backend (which was correct). Why is a backend connection needed to watch DVD? The MySQL connection was OK, only mythbackend was not running.

Perhaps there is an easy fix for this (as avi playback works fine).
